Day 47

We slept in, bad weather forecast until the late afternoon. Took advantage of the 3 good hours with fine weather, and paddled into the arctic circle! Found a beautiful tent spot, put up the tent, ate a freeze-dried dinner, and were ready to go to sleep early. But...before we got into the tent, 5 huge calves suddenly appeared and were overjoyed to see us and our tent! They galavanted happily over and began inspecting and licking all of our belongings while we hid on the other side of the electric fence and tried to lure them away from our campsite. The only tactic that seemed to work was when Bergliot ran far away from them while "mooing." After 2 hours, they followed Bergliot away from the tent far enough so that Ilene had time to throw the, now wet and slimy, tent and everything else over the fence to safety. Whew! Another tiring day 🙂
